Our Story

Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia (PPAZ) is a non-governmental organization with a mandate to provide non-discriminatory, friendly and person centered Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) to all people in Zambia. PPAZ was established in the early 1970’s by a small group of bold and passionate volunteers that recognized the need for Sexual and Reproductive Health Services in the newly formed country of Zambia. At the time, Zambia was extremely conservative and issues concerning Family Planning and Sexual Health were considered taboo and were not openly spoken about in society. The founding members were trailblazers as they advocated for improved maternal health, family planning, safe abortions and a whole host of other issues that are now collectively known as Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)

Today, PPAZ stands as an organisation in Zambia that responds to the challenges of the unmet needs in reproductive health such as high fertility rates, low contraceptive use, high incidence of HIV in the country, low use of condoms for HIV prevention, teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortion and inadequate access to services by underprivileged and the under-served. In Zambia the organization has been fully recognized and appreciated as a reliable service provider and initiator whose programs make a significant contribution to the Zambian people.

From humble beginnings PPAZ has grown into an organisation with operations across all 10 provinces of Zambia, can count on over 2,000 volunteers nationwide, operates 4 Health Facilities and provides 1 Million SRH services annually.
